Review of the Top 3 Hair Clippers

Oster Classic 76 Professional

This Oster product comes highly recommended if you’re ready to step up from the cheap disposables most people try to get by with.  It is widely used by barbers and individuals who care about their looks. It is one of the best corded clippers around. It is designed to be used with thick bushy hair (what kids normally have).

It is great for buzzing hair without painfully pulling the hair like most other clippers. It handles overheating well, even after several uses. It is a heavy duty clipper which gives you a smooth cut. Extremely durable, this product can be used on both dry and wet hair, it is easy to clean and I highly recommend it. The only snag is it’s pretty loud but it cuts through hair like hot knife through butter. It’s also pricier than other models. Click here to read a full review.

Wahl 79300-400 Color Pro 20 Piece Complete Haircutting Kit

Call this the product that over delivers but costs little and you won’t be wrong. This Wahl product has 1215 reviews at the time of writing. It is the second best-selling product in Amazon’s Trimmers & Clippers category. It is a consumer grade buzzer that is highly affordable (less than $20). Even though it’s heavy, the quality is good and the motor feels powerful. Read a full review here.

Philips Norelco Do-It-Yourself

I’ll recommend this if you are just switching to self hair grooming. It’s a decent product which has a long battery life on a single charge. It has 13 built in length settings from 15/32 inch to 19/32 inch and is ergonomically designed for easy handling by men who cut their own hair. It doesn’t have the cutting speed and power the bigger clippers provide but it still gets the job done for beginners. Click here for a full review.

What is an Hair Clipper?

It is a hand-held tool that enables you to achieve simple hair cuts from the comfort of your home or from a barber’s shop.

Difference Between Clippers and Trimmers

Clippers are used for doing the bulk of a hair cut while trimmers are meant for cleaning up the edges and grooming facial hair such as beards and mustaches.

There are electric and manual types. Manually-operated trimmers have a pair of handles which are alternatively squeezed together and released to cut hair close and fast. They have been gradually obliterated by the advent of the clippers driven by electricity.

Electric hair cutters operate with a motor which moves the blades from side to side. They can be used to trim hair at home and in a barber’s shop. You can divide them into ‘corded’ and ‘cordless.’

The cordless ones are without a cord and easier to move around the head to achieve a proper hair cut. They use rechargeable batteries which can be charged when the trimmer is not in use. I highly recommend them for home use.

Corded hair buzzers operate differently. They have cords which are usually plugged into the mains supply to work effectively. They are usually less expensive and dependable. They are highly recommended for professional and heavy use.

Clippers usually have the following parts:

Cutters usually have bodies that have contours as well as rubber handles to allow for a better fit in the hand throughout use.

The blades are either made of stainless steel or ceramic. Stainless steel is used because it does not rust as much as normal steel. On the other hand, ceramic blades can be used by two or more people without overheating. They are more durable than steel and other materials. This is because ceramic does not conduct heat like metal blades. But they are easily destroyed and more expensive to replace than metal blades.

Power Button:

This is usually placed on the side of the clipper for easy access. It is used to turn the product on and off. It gives the user freedom to change angles frequently without having to risk unnecessary shaving accidents. Most clippers have it but some do not. The begin working immediately they are plugged in the mains socket.

Just like a good engine powers a car, a strong motor is vital to driving your hair clipper. There are 3 basic types of clipper motors. I examine each one below alongside the advantages and disadvantages:

The Magnetic Motor

Most cheap clipper models are powered by magnetic motors. These are simple in design and usually dependable. They are made up of a spring and an electromagnet working together to thrust the blade back and forth. They run quietly and provide high blade speeds as well as a smoother cut. They are however lacking in the level of power they can generate (as it is generally lesser than that of the two other motor designs). They can however be utilized occasionally. They are generally maintenance-free (doesn’t need internal oiling) and durable (with fewer moving parts to wear out).

The Rotary Motor

The rotary motor design powers the top range clippers in use today. They operate as AC and DC powered units. Most DC powered units operate without cords (they use batteries). This makes them less powerful than AC powered units but the fact that they can work without cords is an added advantage.  Generally, clippers, featuring rotary motors, cost more and are used for dog and horse grooming. They offer a wide variety of cuts as well as an even amount of power and blade speed.

The Pivot Motor

The pivot and magnetic motors are similar in some respects, just that the former uses two electromagnets and no spring. While the blade speed is low, pivot motor clippers produce at least twice the cutting power over magnetic motor clippers. This makes cutting through thick, heavy and wet hair a breeze. Pivot motor clippers are used by professional stylists and are ideal for everyday usage.

Guide Combs:

They enable you cut your hair to the length you desire. They are accessories that accompany hair clippers. They come in different measurements and are made to be easily attached and detached. They make hair styling easy.

Listed below are the different measurements and names for the combs (from longest to shortest)

No 8: 25mm
N0 7:  22mm
No 6: 19mm
No 5: 16mm
No 4: 13mm
No 3: 10mm
No 2: 6mm
No 1: 3mm

Guide combs are usually referred to by their names than the measurement.

 Mains Lead:

This is usually at the bottom of the body of the shaver. It comes in a variety of lengths to ensure it does not get in the way of the user. Most buzzers have the mains lead as they require electricity to work.

Battery Pack:

Cordless hair shavers use rechargeable batteries. They usually come with separate chargers to ensure the clipper has sufficient charge for its next use.

Factors to Consider

  •  If you prefer a shaver without a cord, please check the battery. It should have a long enough battery life. If it doesn’t, you can consider buying an extra battery or investing in a high-quality model with a rechargeable battery. This is to avoid disappointments that come with having a battery pack up in the middle of a hair cut.
  •  Also look at the types of blades the product has. This will help you know how often the blades need to be replaced, if at all. Just ensure the blades are protected from rust.
  •  You will also want to consider the size of the motor that powers the blades and the rate at which the blades cut. The speed is often measured in blade strokes per minute and the faster the clipper blade is, the smoother it cuts.
  •  Make sure you do extensive research before you commit to any product. Get online, read up  and become well-informed. Famous brands include Wahl, Andis, Conair, Remington, Oster, Philips Norelco, etc. Investigate them and read reviews by actual users of the products. This can help you get a feel of the products before committing to any one of them.
  •  Also look at quality and not low prices. A cheap product will disappoint you when you need it most. With hair cutting devices, you get what you pay for; a cheap brand may not have the features you want or may not be durable.
  • You also want to look at how many times you will need the clipper. If you need it for heavy duty use, you may want to get a professional grade but home use just requires a consumer grade.  If you want to use it in the bathroom, you’ll require a cordless buzzer.
  •  I highly suggest you avoid buying a model from the barbershops as they tend to rip you off. You can buy online. I have had great success purchasing from and I highly recommend them.

Buying hair grooming devices need not be cumbersome. Just follow this buying guide. If you ask me, I would say the best hair clippers are the ones that combine the desired features with full functionality (they cut your hair well).
